Hi, I'm Jeff. And I recently created Jeff's Audio Machines.
I've been a software engineer for over twenty years, and an audio enthusiast my whole life. JAM - short for Jeff's Audio Machines - is what happens when those two threads run into the AI revolution.
I've seen what AI assistance can do to accelerate software engineering, and I wanted that same power applied to audio devices.
The problem of creating sounds
See, the main problem with audio is that people have to use language to describe it: it's a gritty, warm sound. Or a bright, shimmering, echo-y pad. Language is a funny, relative thing - but AI understands that. And AI understands how to write code to design things. Put those two together, and BAM! AI can help humans speak their creative ideas into life!
Second, language is often referential to pop culture. I like the sound of that Black Betty riff, the Spiderbait one. Oh yeah! Alright! Surprisingly, AI actually understands cultural references, too.
Finally, the pedals, plugins, and keyboards we own have fixed programming, generally. Sure, they have knobs and settings and presets, but we have to dig in and learn them. We have to shape our brains to our tools.
And that's why JAM exists. To flip that script. I want my audio devices to be defined by how I think. So I created a JAM Description Language, JDL, and taught AI how to speak it. So you can tell the AI what sound you want, and it builds the software that runs your idea.
How can I play with it?
Where does this software run? Today, on my website, JAMtime.ai, and in a VST or AU plugin you can download and use in your favorite Mac, Windows, or Linux DAW. But my plan is to build a physical guitar pedal. Maybe other devices, too, like synths and sequencers.
AI for the driver's seat, not the steering wheel
Let's be clear: I'm not interested in AI that creates music. I'm interested in AI tools and workflows that make a producer's life dramatically easier.
"Make this brighter," "add more stereo presence," "it should sound like the intro to Teen Spirit" - without having to remember what to click, twist, and set. You stay firmly in the creative driver's seat.
